2
A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.
3
Cell Theory All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the smallest working units of all living things. All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.
4
“TYPICAL” ANIMAL CELL
5
“TYPICAL” PLANT CELL
6
Organelles
8
CELL MEMBRANE Outer layer that controls movement of materials into and out of cell
9
CELL WALL Most commonly found in plant cells and bacteria PLANT CELL Provide Protection and Support BACTERIA CELL
11
Nucleus Directs cell activities Contains genetic material – chromosomes, DNA
12
Cytoplasm Gel-like mixture makes up inside of cell Holds other organelles in cell Surrounded by cell membrane
13
Mitochondria Functions in energy production through chemical reactions
14
VACUOLES Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal Contains water solution Help plants maintain shape
15
CHLOROPLAST Usually found in plant cells Contains green chlorophyll Where photosynthesis takes place
16
Chloroplast Found in Autotrophs Autotrophic organisms make their own food
17
He’s Green. Is he an Autotroph?
18
HETEROTROPHS Organisms that do not make their own food Rely on other organisms
19
Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Red Blood Cell Nerve Cell Bacteria
20
Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
21
Prokaryotic Do not have structures surrounded by membranes Few internal structures One-celled, simple organisms, Bacteria http://library.thinkquest.org/C004535/prokaryotic_cells.html
22
Eukaryotic Contain organelles surrounded by membranes Most living organisms (you!) PlantAnimal http://library.thinkquest.org/C004535/eukaryotic_cells.html
