Monday 9/14/2015 Agenda: Introduction to Cells and Cell Parts Notes: Cell Discovery and Cell Theory Activity: Brain Pop with Worksheet Homework: No Homework Tonight! GRADEBOOK FOR THE QUARTER CLOSES TUESDAY, 9/22/2015!!! Objective: Compare the form and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their cellular components

Introduction to Cellular Biology http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFuEo2ccTPA

http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begin/cells/scale/

Cells: the basic unit of life

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 1. PROKARYOTIC CELLS: NO nucleus Are smaller Has no membrane around organelles Has very FEW ORGANELLES Usually has 1 circular chromosome containing DNA Reproduce by BINARY FISSION ► EXAMPLE: BACTERIA

EUKARYOTIC CELLS: HAS NUCLEUS Are BIGGER Has membranes around organelles MANY organelles Has multiple chromosomes Reproduce by MITOSIS & MIOSIS EXAMPLE: ANIMAL, FUNGI, Plant

PROKARYOTIC CELLS AND EUKARYOTIC CELLS 2 Types of Eukaryotic Cells: Plant and Animal

What type of cell is it? Cell Prokaryotic Eukaryotic Plant Animal

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLANT & ANIMAL CELLS PLANT CELLS: HAVE CHLOROPLASTS HAVE A CELL WALL LARGE VACUOLE NO CENTRIOLES ANIMAL CELLS: NO CHLOROPLAST NO CELL WALL SMALL VACUOLES HAVE CENTRIOLES

CELL DISCOVERY ROBERT HOOKE (1665) - Named CELLS from looking at once living organisms (CORK).

CELL DISCOVERY ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK (1673) - 1 ST person to observe LIVING CELLS. - Improved the microscope

THE CELL THEORY 150 YRS LATER CAME THE CELL THEORY In 1839 Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann & Rudolf Virchow outlined the 3 parts to this theory. 1. All living organisms are made up of 1 or more cells. 2. Cells are the reason for structure & function in an organism. 3. Cells come only form the reproduction of existing cells

What do living organisms have in common? 1. MADE OF ONE OR MORE CELLS 2. USE ENERGY (i.e. METABOLISM) 3. MAINTAINS HOMEOSTASIS 4. GROW 5. ABILITY TO REPRODUCE
