Learning Target: Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties. Must Do: Use the handout (Common Ions) to make flashcards of all the “ate” ions (for example nitrate). One one side of the card, write the chemical name. On the opposite side, write the molecular formula, including the charge (for example NO 3 - ) 10 th Grade Chemistry: 1/27/14 Agenda: Must Do WWK Brief Lesson/video iPad Chem Mahjong Cartoon dry spell.

WsWK + +

Catalyze/Catalyst catalyst noun (Concise Encyclopedia) Any substance of which a small proportion notably affects the reaction rate of a chemical reaction without itself being changed or consumedreaction ratechemical reaction Examples?

Goal for this unit Write a complete and balanced chemical equation from a prompt Example: Write the chemical equation for the reaction of Aluminum with potassium perchlorate. Balance the reaction Identify the type of reaction Al + KClO4  Al O + KCl

How do we get there? Memorize some polyatomic ion formulas

Memorizing the Polyatomic ion formulas Memorize as little as possible at first (they’re become second nature…eventually) Memorize the –ates Then recognize the pattern HypochloriteChloriteChloratePerchlorate HypoMinus one oxygen ClO 3 - Hyper Under or Low ClO 2 - Over ClO 2 -

Other ions Phosphate is PO 4 3- Phosphite? Perphosphate? Oxide is O 2- Peroxide? Nitrate is? Nitrite is?

Reaction Classification Five Types or Reactions (VIDEO)(VIDEO) Synthesis Decomposition Single Replacement Double Replacement Combustion

Chem Mahjong! I’ve loaded the Chem Mahjong app on all the iPads I know that sounds pretty nerdy, but it’s kind of fun High score gets bragging rights…maybe some chocolate. The one to play is the polyatomic ions in x-board format. The goal is to help you to memorize the formulas in a way that isn’t as painful, and dreadfully boring as flash cards.
