Important Vocabulary Words for Mixtures and Solutions
2
Solubility We say a substance dissolves if it spreads apart when added to a solvent (like water) so we can’t crystals/grains anymore Dissolving is a complex physical and chemical process! The substance is still there! We just can’t see it because it has spread apart. Question: How is dissolving different from melting?
3
Solubility A substance is soluble if it dissolves in water. Example: We observed in class that table salt (sodium chloride) is soluble in water. After adding it to water, it spreads apart so we can no longer see it!
4
Insoluble A substance is insoluble if it will NOT dissolve in water. Example: We observed in class that zinc oxide is insoluble in water. After adding it to water, we can still see the zinc oxide...it doesn’t “go” anywhere!
5
Solutions A solvent is the “larger part” of a solution. Usually, the solvent is a liquid. SOLUTESOLVENTSOLUTION + =
6
Solutions A solute is the “smaller part” of a solution. Usually the solute is a solid. SOLUTESOLVENTSOLUTION + =
7
Solutions When a solute and a solvent are mixed together, this forms a solution. SOLUTESOLVENTSOLUTION + =
8
Types of Mixtures When a solute dissolves in a solvent to make a solution, this is called a HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE. You cannot see any “separate parts” because it is all mixed together thoroughly. What homogeneous mixtures can you think of? Mountain Dew
9
Types of Mixtures The other type of mixture is a HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE. With a heterogeneous mixture, you can see the different “parts” of the mixture. Sulfur and iron What heterogeneous mixtures can you think of?

FLASH CARDS You will be making flash cards to help you learn today’s vocabulary! Each flash card should contain the following: The vocabulary word on one side The vocabulary word on one side The definition and a picture on the other side The definition and a picture on the other side Example of a flash card: PURE SUBSTANCE A substance that is made of only one thing/substance FRONT BACK

FLASH CARDS Each flash card should contain the following: The vocabulary word on one side The vocabulary word on one side The definition and a picture on the other side The definition and a picture on the other side Make flash cards of the following vocabulary words: SoluteSolventSolution SoluteSolventSolution SolubleInsoluble SolubleInsoluble SaturatedSolubility SaturatedSolubility * We have not learned these words yet! You will record pictures and definitions for them later.

DIGI Question: Mixtures and Solutions In this scenario, what is the: A) solvent B) solute C) solution Sugar is added to water in this bird feeder to create a sweet treat for hummingbirds!
