LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Summary & timeline from Bruxelles 2 A2 delivered to CERN for test beam at T9 on 05 Aug Currently in storage at B185 All transports smooth, no problems A3 vessel delivered to Frascati 06 Aug All blocks and bananas complete, 1 layer mounted Expect to finish by mid Oct A4 vessel under construction Expect delivery end Sep All bananas ready by mid Oct, can begin mounting when A3 ships A5 vessel delivery planned for end Nov

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Optimization of banana cabling Old cabling New cabling Signal & HV Signal, HV & LED LED LED Signal & HV “Internal” cabling of bananas: Equalizes apparent cable lengths Facilitates vessel cabling Evidence of signal/LED crosstalk at A2 test Separate signal and LED cables

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Cabling optimizations for A3 480 cables in A1-A5 (2.2 km) Strong tendency to get unruly! Cable grille enlarged (40 → 50 cm) Additional TLC used in routing Very good results obtained
5
LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Cabling optimizations near flanges A2 A3 A3 Slack at flange exit difficult to handle Advantages from neater cabling work Add retaining grill to keep cable slack out of acceptance Virtually no cable slack in acceptance!

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 A3 finishing, packing, and shipping 6 A3 rotated to horizontal 26 Nov and closed 27 Nov for final vacuum test Leak tested and pumped down to 2 × 10 −5 mbar by afternoon of 29 Nov Rotated to vertical 29 Nov for final packing Vibration and temperature monitored from start of final handling until arrival at CERN 30 Nov 10:41 30 Nov 11:23

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 A3 transport: Vibration log 8 Accelerometer settings Warning/alarm thresholds: 1g/3g 40 Hz low-pass filter to avoid saturation by low-amplitude road noise #20208 - fastened to A2 No events during entire period on the road! Accelerometer removed during handling at CERN 107 warnings and 1 alarm during accelerometer removal and return trip #20070 – bolted to truck bed Data useless – battery appears to have died ShockLog unit is currently being tested in our laboratory

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Block inventory and testing 11 3477 total in V. Palladino’s database 2095 inspected (incl. 412 top layer) 1382 not inspected (all from top layer) 225 bad 310 “on hold” criteria too strict? 1560 good 742 processed 818 available New LabView interface for oven integrated into production chain: Current and rate tests at 3 HV settings, including individual working point What to do about 1692 blocks of unknown status? Procedure: 1.Temp. HV connector (Burndy) 2.Final signal connector w/ adapter 3.Normal oven run 4.Obtain HV working point 5.Rate and current test Tests performed for all blocks Results added to LAV RDB More than 100 blocks tested so far No blocks with rates > 10 Hz at working point

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – CERN – 14 December 2010 Difficulties with top-layer blocks 12 Very sticky residue Anti-corona resin Anti-coronal resin burned through with desoldering tool (250 ∘ C) Toxic fumes Clogging Chemical armamentarium to remove glue Acetone iPr-OH Label removers
