Zen Buddhism Arose during the Muromachi period in the 14th century.
Followers hoped to achieve enlightenment, through “meditation”. Emphasized rigorous discipline and personal responsibility. Zen teachings: mental calm, lack of fear, and spontaneity are signs of advancements towards enlightenment.
