If talks with France fail, Monroe was instructed to open up military talks with Britain

LONE STAR REPUBLIC 1836-1844- Texas had a precarious existence Mexico- Refused to recognize Texas Independence. Regarded the Lone Star republic as a province in revolt Mexico- Threatened war with America if America annexed Texas Texas- Forced to maintain a costly military. Never knew when Mexico would strike. Texas- Negotiations with Britain and France for military help- (page 375) 1844- EXPANSION AND ANNEXATION BECAME A MAJOR ISSUE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. 1845- TEXAS WAS FROMALLY INVITED TO BECOME THE 28 TH STATE.
