Are our students ready for the new global economy? for the new global economy?

Are our students  Critical thinkers?  Problem solvers?  Good communicators?  Good collaborators?  Information and technology literate?  Innovative and creative?  Globally competent?  Financially literate?  Critical thinkers?  Problem solvers?  Good communicators?  Good collaborators?  Information and technology literate?  Innovative and creative?  Globally competent?  Financially literate?

VISION: All students graduating from high school with a level of STEM literacy sufficient to: 1. Ensure their success in employment, post-secondary education, or both; and 2. Prepare them to be competent, capable citizens in a technology-dependent, democratic society. 1. Ensure their success in employment, post-secondary education, or both; and 2. 5 Emerald STEM Mission Emerald students will be prepared to succeed academically, socially, and technologically in our rapidly changing world.

What makes EmSTEM special? Block Schedule Advisory Class Electives for all students Focus on science, technology, engineering & math Challenge-based learning Block Schedule Advisory Class Electives for all students Focus on science, technology, engineering & math Challenge-based learning

7 Block ScheduleRationale MATH 77 minutes daily year-long course * extended math time every day * small group differentiation and practice * Challenge-Based Learning opportunities provided by interdisciplinary teams with common preparation/collaboration time Language Arts 77 minutes daily year-long course * extended language arts time every day * small group differentiation and practice * Challenge-Based Learning opportunities provided by interdisciplinary teams with common preparation/collaboration time Advisory and Lunch 30 minutes each * additional support provided to students based upon needs and interests during Advisory Science and History 77 minutes daily semester course * Challenge-Based Learning opportunities provided by interdisciplinary teams with common preparation/collaboration time NOTE: STEM Electives based on science & technology standards, thereby increasing instructional time in science and tech compared to traditional schedule PE or Elective 77 minutes alternating daily * STEM Electives (Project Lead the Way) or Band (STEAM) available to all students * More productive PE time vs. locker room time

Educate to Innovate President Obama, 1/6/10 Whether it’s improving our health or harnessing clean energy, protecting our security or succeeding in the global economy, our future depends on reaffirming America’s role as the world’s engine of scientific discovery and technological innovation. And that leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today, especially in math, science, technology, and engineering.
