Summary The story starts off telling about Madam Loisel’s “rough life”. She comes off as a spoiled brat because all she wants is more. Her husband, being generous, got her an invitation to the ball and all she did was complain about her lack of elegant garments. As a result of this, loving friend gave her jewelry to borrow for the ball. When she appeared at the ball, it was the happiest time of her life. When she came home, she discovered she lost the necklace. Because of this, she didn’t tell her friend about it and instead worked extremely hard to buy her friend a new one. Towards the end of the story, she discovered that the necklace was faux and was much cheaper than what she had imagined.

Notes She was born into the lower class but thought she should have been in the higher class because of her beauty. Her husband got her an invitation to a ball She didn’t want to go because she didn’t have a dress to wear Her kind husband gave her his money that he was saving up for a gun After buying the dress, she still wanted more which lead to borrowing the necklace After coming home from having fun at the ball, she realized she had lost the necklace Her and her husband look day and night for it, they even retraced their steps, and ended up having no luck They wrote a letter to Mme. Forister saying they had broke the necklace and were getting it fixed They started to search for an identical necklace, and eventually found one that was 34,000 francs They had to borrow money from many different people in order to pay for the necklace It took them 10 years to pay off the necklace After paying off the necklace they eventually told Mme. Forister that they lost the necklace, and she told them that the necklace was worth at least 500 francs, because it was a faux After the ten years of working off the necklace she lost all of her beauty

Setting and Theme Setting Time: 1930’s
Place: England – Ball and the house Theme General - acceptance Specific - if a person accepts your place in life their life will become easier

Conflicts Person vs Self: This conflict is person vs self because she wasn’t happy with what she had and wanted more, which lead to ruining the next ten years of her life.

Literary Elements Irony – beauty was the only thing she had to value in her life, and she lost it because she was unhappy with what she had, besides her beauty. Metaphor – the necklace is like her own way of being in an upper class, and it made her feel that way
