Oban and the Railway

Oban was a small fishing village which became a popular holiday resort after a visit by Queen Victoria in 1847. Steamers linked the Clyde to the west coast of Scotland.

Callander to Oban railway A committee was set up in 1864 to discuss opening the railway from Callander to Oban. The line was complete and opened in July 1880

Loch Awe Hotel was constructed in 1871, at the same time as the Callander and Oban railway was built. Just below the Hotel was built its own railway station, which is still open.

Station Hotel With the arrival of the railway in 1880 the town continued to expand and be popular with holidaymakers. It still remains a popular holiday resort today.

The Great Western Hotel Many of the large hotels on the sea front were built to accommodate the influx of visitors after the Queen's visit.

The bridge was opened in 1903 to carry the railway across the Falls of Lora at the mouth of Loch Etive, north of Oban towards Ballachulish
