Chapter 1 Systems, Support, and Movement
2
Section 1.1 – The human body is complex.
The body has cells, tissues and organs. List the organization of your body from smallest to largest: cells tissues organs organ systems organism Although these levels may seem separate from one another, they all work TOGETHER.
3
Cells The basic unit of life. Make up all living things.
There are 2 kids of cells: Animal Plant
4
Tissues A group of similar cells that work together to perform a particular function. To carry out their functions, cells must be organized as a tissue.
5
Types of Tissues Epithelial Nerve Functions as a boundary.
Covers all the inner and outer surfaces of your body. Nerve Functions as a messaging system. Carries electrical impulses between your brain and the rest of your body.
6
Types of Tissues (cont.)
Muscle Functions in movement. Can be voluntary or involuntary. Connective Holds parts of your body together. Provides support, protection, strength, padding, and insulation.
7
Organs Structure that is made up of 2 or more types of tissue that work together to carry out a function in the body. The structure of an organ relates to its function. What are some examples of organs?
8
Organ Systems A group of organs that together perform a function that helps the body meet its needs for energy and materials. Organ systems allow the human organism to grow, reproduce, and maintain life.
9
Examples of Organ Systems
Skeletal Muscular Respiratory Digestive Urinary Circulatory Immune Nervous Reproductive
10
Homeostasis The body’s systems interact with one another.
Homeostasis is the ability of your body to maintain internal conditions. What is an example of this?
11
Review: Draw a diagram that shows the relationship among cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Identify three functions performed by organ systems. Make a chart of the four basic tissue groups that includes names, functions, and examples.
