1. HUMANITIES 9 COURSE DESCRIPTION UNITED NATIONS

2. Introduction In order to better prepare you for your entrance into the IGCSE programme next year, you will all be engaging in an inter- disciplinary course that will help to equip you for the variety of content and skill development you will face in the future. Drawing content and skills from Geography, History, Economics and Business Studies, the Year 9 Humanities course will explore a key institution that shapes our world today, the United Nations. Founded on October 24 th, 1945, the United Nations has spent the past seven decades attempting to create a peaceful and productive planet. Throughout this year we will explore some of the important ways in which the UN has, does and will impact the world

3. The year will be divided as follows: Term 1: The United Nations and Conflict Resolution Term 2: The UN Environmental and Aid Programmes Term 3: The UN in the 21 st Century (with MUN Summit)

4. Integration In order to better develop your knowledge of History and Geography, as well as introduce you to key concepts in Economics and Business Studies, each term you will complete 1-2 summative assessments that allow you demonstrate your knowledge of the UN and the aspects of our world that it attempts to impact. In addition to the content, we will also be integrating ICT skills into the programme that will allow you to further develop you mastery of the Key Stage 3 ICT standards.

5. By the end of the course you should have demonstrated mastery in the below areas: Finding Information Using Data and Information Sources Searching and Selecting Organising and Investigating

7. In addition to your classroom teacher, you will also be working with Mr Faught in the Library and Mr. Deborde in ICT to help support your learning.

8. The MUN Summit In term 3, you will each be assigned a nation to represent for a Model United Nations summit. You will be given a country brief and time to prepare to represent your nation. At this summit you will be expected to demonstrate what you have learned throughout the year, both in content and skills. More specific details will be provided once we get close to term 3.

9. Assessment and Student Expectations Students will be assessed through a variety of methods, both formative and summative, in order to gauge their progress towards our collective goals. Grades will be assessed at the end of each term using a 6 point grading scale: A*, A, B, C, D, E. Students will be expected to retain all assignments that are returned by the teacher in their binders for preparation purposes in term 3.

10. As with your other courses, you will be expected to come to each class ready to engage with your teacher and fellow students. In order to achieve this goal, it is recommended that all students: Submit all assignments in a timely fashion Come to class ready to actively engage in the day’s activities Be responsible for their own organization Be respectful of themselves, their peers and the instructor Participate in class discussions and allow others to do so as well Ask questions/seek clarification as the need arises to maximize understanding
