1
Cycles of Matter
2
Matter Matter is recycled in an ecosystem, unlike energy. What is it? Anything that has mass and takes up space.
3
WATER RECYCLES
4
Water Cycle Condensation
5
The Water Cycle condensation
6
Water Cycle It is a continuous process by which water moves from the Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back. It includes the processes of – Evaporation – Condensation – Precipitation
7
Evaporation Occurs when energy from the sun heats water causing the water molecules to become so active that some of them rise into the atmosphere as vapor.
8
Evaporation Liquid Gas add heat energy
9
Condensation Gas Liquid take away heat energy
10
Condensation Condensation is the process of water changing from water vapor to tiny droplets of water.
11
Precipitation liquid or solid Rain, snow, sleet or hail
12
What is a water molecule? Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. It is written as H 2 0.
13
Ice cube – solid phase
14
Water – liquid phase
15
Water vapor - gas phase
16
When heat energy is added to water molecules, they move faster and further apart.
18
Solid form of water
19
A drop of liquid water
20
Vapor form of water
22
Do the water molecules change what they look like when they change phase? No, they are still H 2 O! The water molecules only change in speed and the distance from each other.
