Set 3 Muscles Deep Muscles of the Torso
3
Multifidus
4
Multifidus “rope of muscle” Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: spinous process of vertebrae above flexion, extension and rotation of spine transverse process of vertebrae * runs from axis to sacrum (4 th foramen)
5
External Intercostales
6
Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: lower border of rib upper border of rib below active during respiration, elevate ribs (inhale)
7
Serratus anterior
8
Serratus anterior “pushing muscle” Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: ventral surface of scapula (medial border “pushing muscle”; pulls scapula anteriorly and downward; bench press, serving in tennis, throwing baseball outer surface of ribs 1-8 (superior border)
9
Subscapularis (rotator Cuff)
10
Subscapularis (rotator cuff) Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: lesser tubercle (humerus) and front of capsule of shoulder joint rotates the head of the humerus medially (internal rotation – point thumb down); when the arm is raised, it draws the humerus forward and downward. fills subscapular fossa (anterior side of scapula) * It is a powerful defense to the front of the shoulder-joint, preventing displacement of the head of the humerus. Rehab: Pull band across abdomen
11
Levator scapulae “shrug muscle”
12
Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: elevates scapula; “I don’t know shrugging muscle” and/or bends neck and can rotate head superior border and medial margin of scapula transverse processes of C1-C4 vertebrae
13
Levator scapulae “shrug muscle”
14
Pectoralis minor
15
Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: sternal ends of ribs 3-5 coracoid process of scapula pulls scapula anteriorly and downward
16
Rhomboideus major
17
Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: spinous process of T2-T5 Vertebrae medial border of scapula raises and adducts scapula
18
Rhomboideus minor
19
Origin: Origin: Insertion: Insertion: Action: Action: spinous process of C7 – T1 vertebrae vertebral border of scapula at medial end of scapular spine retracts the scapula (shoulder) and rotates downward
