Legacy of the Reformation Brought the division of the Catholicism & Protestantism By 1700, Europe was now divided by religious lines It would never be under one church again

Religious Wars Wars would break out between the 2 religions Thirty Years War (1618- 1648) These wars went throughout most of Europe In 1648, the Peace of Westphalia was established Recognized the permanent division of the 2 churches

Protestantism & Democracy Many feel that Protestant practice of church self government help with the development of democratic practices John Calvin allowed the people to govern the church Did this through presbytery Influence Presbyterians & Puritans

Puritans Puritans believed that God voluntarily entered into a covenant with people which they could be saved It would be seen in a democratic view Mayflower Compact of the Pilgrims Pilgrims were radical Puritans, they wrote an agreement that they would make “just and equal laws”

Federalism People argued that the covenant influenced federalism Shared power between organizations Calvinist churches allowed members of the church with its members This practice influenced plans for organizing govt.
