1
Habitat An environment that provides the things an organism needs to live, grow and reproduce
2
The living parts of a habitat
Biotic Factors The living parts of a habitat Panda Bamboo plants clown fish sea anemone
3
Abiotic Factors The non-living parts of a habitat Water Sunlight
Oxygen Temperature Soil
4
Abiotic Factors The non-living parts of a habitat water
temperature of water oxygen (dissolved in the water) oxygen (air) sunlight soil or dirt temperature
5
Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Biotic = living components of an ecosystem including anything that was once alive. Abiotic = non living components of an ecosystem. These were never alive.
6
Putting it all together
What basic needs are met by an organisms habitat? Food water shelter and other things it needs to live.
7
Putting it all together
Why do different organisms live in different habitats? Because different organisms have different needs for survival.
8
Putting it all together
Using the word photosynthesis, explain why water and sunlight are two abiotic factors that are important to all organisms
9
Species A group of organisms that are physically similar and that can mate and produce fertile offspring.
10
Population All the members of one species in a particular area.
11
Community All the different populations that live together in an area.
12
Ecosystem A community of organisms that live in an area along with their non living surroundings
13
Ecology The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment.
14
Ecological Organization
Biome Larger Ecosystem Ecological Organization Community Population Smaller Single organism
15
Putting it all together
Would all the trees in a forest make up a population? Why or Why not?
16
Putting it all together
What is the difference between a community and an ecosystem? Community Ecosystem
17
Putting it all together
Why do ecologists study both the biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem?
