Presenting the SKILLS How to PROVE that you deserve to graduate

Today’s Agenda 1.Get into pairs. 2.Develop your own definition of each skill (to be used in your presentation) 3.Create an example of the skill (also to be used in your presentation) 4.Choose an artifact to represent your proof of this skill 5.Articulate in one paragraph how this artifact proves that you have mastered this skill. 6.Articulate in one paragraph how you had to use this skill effectively in order to complete your artifact.

What you will need 1.Lesson Presentation (Provided for you) 2.Paper or notebook 3.Pen or Pencil 4.An open mind 5.A positive attitude! a. Today’s lesson will be hard, but YOU CAN DO THIS! Just be focused on the task at hand, and be prepared to THINK carefully about your issue. b. On the bright side: by the end of today, the Skills portion of your presentation will be mostly complete!

What are you “defending” in the portfolio defense? Two answers: 1.The solution to your problem (this is the primary answer, and the one you should give if you are asked this question) 2.The right to graduate a. you have to PROVE that you deserve to graduate by proving that you understand the skills required.

Skills overview There are three major skills that must be proven in your senior portfolio 1.Research 2.Inquiry 3.Textual Analysis

Remember, for each skill you MUST provide the following: 1.A definition of the skill (in your own words) a. Should be TYPED in bullet point on your slide 2.An example of the skill (perhaps a metaphor?) a. Should be TYPED in bullet point on your slide 3.How you can use this skill in real life 4.A description of how the artifact uses this skill/proves that you can apply this skill effectively. 5.A description of how you used this skill in order to complete this artifact a. These last three should be SPOKEN ALOUD only.

Defining RESEARCH Standard: Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different formats as well as in words in order to address a question or solve a problem. 1.As a pair, what are you expected TO DO? (What is the action you are expected to take in this standard?)

Defining RESEARCH Standard: Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in different formats as well as in words in order to address a question or solve a problem. 2. Now, put this standard in your own words The definition you create is the one that you should include on your Research slide in your presentation.

Example of the skill Think of a real-life situation where you would need to use the skill of research. In 2-3 sentences as a group, answer the following questions: 1.How would using the skill of research help you with this situation? 2.How would you apply this skill in order to get the result you want from the situation? Example: Searching for the correct location to pay a parking ticket in person.

Choose an artifact As a pair, consider the artifacts that we have done in ELA. 1. Cornell Notes 2. Solutions Paper 3. Research Paper

Connecting Artifact and Skill THIS section is the backbone of your portfolio. THIS is what will determine the “pass” or “fail” ● Answer these questions in one paragraph (6-8 sentences) using your definition of the skill of research o Why is the skill of research necessary to complete this artifact? o Think of your definition of the skill of research; how did you need to use this skill in order to successfully complete this artifact? o What did you learn about researching material as you went through the process of completing this artifact?

Connecting Artifact and Skill Partners share their paragraphs

Defining INQUIRY General standard: Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that probe reasoning and evidence, ensure a hearing for a full range of topics on a topic or issue; clarify, verify or challenge ideas, and conclusions; and promote divergent and creative perspectives. 1. What are you expected TO DO? (What are the action words?)

Defining INQUIRY General standard: Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that probe reasoning and evidence, ensure a hearing for a full range of topics on a topic or issue; clarify, verify or challenge ideas, and conclusions; and promote divergent and creative perspectives. *Now, put this standard in your own words The definition you create is the one that you should include on your Inquiry slide in your presentation.

Example of the skill Think of a real-life situation where you would need to use the skill of inquiry. In 2-3 sentences, answer the following questions: 1.How would using the skill of inquiry help you with this situation? 2.How would you apply this skill in order to get the result you want from the situation? Example: When figuring out which college is best for you to go to, you need to ask a lot of questions of the college, of your parents and of yourself.

Choose an artifact Think of all of the artifacts that are available to you: 1. Cornell Notes 2. Math Portion of the Portfolio 3. Solutions Paper *Choose ONE to represent the skill of inquiry

Connecting Artifact and Skill ● THIS section is the backbone of your portfolio. THIS is what will determine the “pass” or “fail” ● Answer these questions in one paragraph (6-8 sentences) using your definition of the skill of inquiry: o Why is the skill of inquiry necessary to complete this artifact? o Think of your definition of the skill of inquiry; how did you need to use this skill in order to successfully complete this artifact? o What did you learn about using methods of questioning and inquiry as you went through the process of completing this artifact?

Connecting Artifact and Skill ● Pairs share their paragraphs

Defining TEXTUAL ANALYSIS General standard: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. 1. What are you expected TO DO? (What are the action words?)

Defining TEXTUAL ANALYSIS General standard: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. Now, put this standard in your own words The definition you create is the one that you should include on your Textual Analysis slide in your presentation.

Example of the skill Think of a real-life situation where you would need to use the skill of textual analysis. In 2-3 sentences, answer the following questions: 1.How would using the skill of textual analysis help you with this situation? 2.How would you apply this skill in order to get the result you want from the situation? Example: Reading an employment contract to understand the terms of a job.

Choose an artifact Reflect on the ELA artifacts. 1.Defense Paper 2.Solutions Paper 3.Cornell Notes *Choose ONE to represent the skill of textual analysis

Connecting Artifact and Skill ● THIS section is the backbone of your portfolio. THIS is what will determine the “pass” or “fail” ● Answer these questions in one paragraph (6-8 sentences) using your definition of Textual Analysis: o Why is the skill of textual analysis necessary to complete this artifact? o Think of your definition of the skill of textual analysis; how did you need to use this skill in order to successfully complete this artifact? o What did you learn about analyzing text for its meaning as you went through the process of completing this artifact?

Connecting Artifact and Skill ● Pairs share their paragraphs

Putting it together ● Your skills should each be presented on their own slide, for a total of three (3) slides. ● For each slide, you should have three bullet points: o Skill Definition (In your own words) o Skill Example (very, very short summary) o Artifact that provides evidence of mastery

Speaking your way to a “PASS” *(with Distinction!) ● REMEMBER o You have to be able to prove your right to graduate o You do this through what you say, not what you put on the slides o The important part is to study your artifacts so that you know your information backwards and forwards o Use your notes from today as a script to help you present your artifacts and skills o BE PREPARED FOR SURPRISE QUESTIONS. But if you know your info, you can handle anything.

Speaking your way to a “PASS” *(with Distinction!) Individually now, begin designing 3 slides for 3 skills. 1.Research- Cornell Notes or Solutions Paper 2. Inquiry- Math Project 3. Textual Analysis –Defense Paper Reflect on how this process works for you and your project and your artifacts.

Remember, for each skill you MUST provide the following: 1.A definition of the skill (in your own words) a. Should be TYPED in bullet point on your slide 2.An example of the skill a.
