Review of the Criminal Justice System The Police: maintains public order by enforcing law Judicial System: court system that determines guilt through strict rules and procedures Penal System: those found guilty of criminal offense face a range of consequences

Punishment and Its Goals Retribution: the belief that a wrong done by an individual should be met with an equivalent form of suffering “eye for an eye” Deterrence: the attempt to prevent further criminal behaviour through punishment...tries to prevent re-offending Rehabilitation: view that the offender can be brought back into society through education, therapy or positive supportive environment

Prisons as Social Control Prisons originally built as efficient way to punish, discipline, and rehabilitate criminals Is this effective? Recidivism rate: the rate at which criminals repeat their offences and return to prison
