14 Cause #1 l Cubans were fighting for independence from Spain l Spanish leaders were forcing rebels in camps (200,000 Cubans died in these camps) l America sided with the Cubans

16 Cause #2  American businesses had invested in Cuba.  The possible war in Cuba worried them.  President William McKinley (R) sent the Maine in 1898 to Cuba to protect America’s interest.  There was a mysterious explosion and the ship sunk.  260 Americans died!  Americans wondered: “Who did it?”

21 Cause #3 l Anti-Spanish feelings spread through “yellow journalism” (exaggerated new stories) –Joseph Pulitzer –World –William Randolph Hearst – Journal l The newspapers decided that Spain was the cause of the explosion.  The newspapers used emotion rather than facts which helped sell papers.

27 l The Philippines = Spanish colony for 300 years l Filipinos, led by Emilio Aguinaldo, fought with America for independence from Spain. l George Dewey defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Manila Bay l The Spanish lost and turned over control of the Philippines to the U.S. –U.S now has to decide what to do with the Philippines

31 Buffalo Soldiers  African American troops would fight bravely in the Spanish-American War.  They received very little publicity.  Black troops got their nickname from the Indians out west.  The Americans won the war so easily that it was nicknamed:
