Energy Transformations

Energy is Review: What IS Energy? the ability to do work or make a change Move matter (stuff)Change matter (stuff) For example: Move something from here to there (like a car), around and around (like a turbine), up and down (like a piston), back and forth (like legs), etc. Maybe it will be a physical change Maybe it will be a chemical change When there is a change in the color, shape, size, or state (solid, liquid, gas) of the matter When matter changes to an entirely new substance

Review: Why do we NEED energy? Energy helps us in five very valuable ways: 1.) Energy makes things move. 2.) Energy makes heat. 3.) Energy makes light. 4.) Energy makes technology work because it runs electrical devices. 5.) Energy makes things grow.

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but we can….. transform it into other sorts of energy.

The wind flows over the airfoil shaped blades causing lift, like the effect on airplane wings, causing them to turn. The blades are connected to a drive shaft that turns an electric generator to produce electricity. Wind energy to electric energy. Where does the wind come from?

In the past, wind was used to grind grain. In the West it was used to pump water out of the ground. Now wind is used to create electricity.

The vibrating drum and the plucked guitar string transfer energy to the air as sound. This sound energy can be transferred to your eardrum as kinetic mechanical energy (movement energy). A cup of hot tea has heat energy in the form of kinetic energy from its particles. Some of this energy is transferred to the particles in cold milk, which you pour in to make the tea cooler.

Energy changes form, but the total amount of energy in the universe stays the same. Scientists at the Department of Energy think they have discovered a mysterious new form of energy called "dark energy" that is actually causing the universe to grow!
