Module 17/Page 1 Speaking Hebrew - מְדַבְּרִֽים עִבְרִֽית We are now ready to commence the last phase of this course, learning to converse in Modern Hebrew. This will consist, at least initially, of a series of exercises that will require a student to say aloud, in Hebrew, some provided material in English (supplied in advance in order to allow the students sufficient time to translate it into Hebrew). These exercises will be carried out in duplex audio mode, with all students being in two audio-capable chat-rooms that operate on separate platforms. The instructor will be on the microphone in one chat-room and students will rotate on the microphone in the other chat-room. This will enable real-time help and assistance by the instructor. The above paragraph is crossed out because the experiment to operate in the duplex audio mode did not work well for everyone, particularly in terms of hearing reverberating echoes, and it also led to some degree of confusion. Instead, and until further notice, we will operate in the way that the class was being held up to the end of Phase 2, i.e., the weekly class sessions will be held in the Jewish Home chat-room on the Virtual Yeshiva (login page - http://JewishHome.virtualyeshiva.torahu.com/), and the two weekly practice sessions will be held in the Learn Hebrew chat-room (login page - http://LearnHebrew.virtualyeshiva.torahu.com/).http://JewishHome.virtualyeshiva.torahu.com/http://LearnHebrew.virtualyeshiva.torahu.com/ Exercises will be sent via e-mail and also posted on the Modern Hebrew Page (http://thejewishhome.org/ModernHebrew.html). Solutions will be posted there after the completion of each exercise. To facilitate proper notation in the exercises, the TrueType Hebrew font will be changed from David to the Ezra SIL, for which download information is posted on the Modern Hebrew Page.http://thejewishhome.org/ModernHebrew.html

The transliterations will slowly be phased out with the introduction of a special symbol that is commonly used in the Hebrew Bible and Hebrew prayer books to mark accented syllables in words in which there is either an ambiguity or a special requirement about their pronunciation. Using this symbol should increase the skill in properly reading and pronouncing Hebrew vocabulary. The accent mark called מֶֽתֶג (MEteg) is a useful tool. It is a small vertical line ( ֽ ) that is placed under the letter and to the left of the vowel (when the vowel is also under the letter) in a multi-syllabic word, and it marks the accented syllable. The meteg - הַמֶּֽתֶג

He then follows with more than two columns of examples of how this verb is used.
