6 President Barrack Obama born August 4, 1961 Sheldon: “He is the greatest President and he speaks to the people.”

7 W.E.B. Dubois Born: February 23, 1868. Died: August 27, 1963. Class: “He was important civil rights leader and co-founder of the NAACP.”

8 Whitney Houston August 9, 1963 - February 11, 2012 “A Musical Superstar”

9 Shirley Chisholm November 30, 1924 – January 1, 2005 Class: “She was the first black congresswoman and first female presidential candidate.”

10 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968 Curtis: “He had a dream that all children could go to school together.” He was leader of the American Civil Rights Movement of non- violence from December, 1955 until April 4, 1968

34 Booker T. Washington (April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915) Class: “He was a major influence on southern race relations.”

35 Thurgood T. Marshall October 2, 1967 – October 1, 1991 Thurgood Marshall represented and won more cases before the United States Supreme Court than any other American. He was a Supreme Court Justice.

36 Mary McLeod Bethune (July 10, 1875 – May 18, 1955) Started a school for African Americans and was an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
