Joe Louis Joe Louis was born on May 13, 1914 He was the World Heavyweight Champion from 1937-1949 His nickname is the “Brown Bomber” Joe Louis helped make boxing popular Joe Louis’s impact was felt across the United States Joe Louis was known as the first African American to achieve the status of hero within the United States Many African Americans hoped Joe would show the world the strength & pride of all Americans His most famous fight was against a Germany, Max Schmeling He lost his first fight to Schmeling in 1935, but regain his title with a win in the re-match to Schmeling in 1936. The re-match still is one of the most famous sporting events of the 20 th century. It gave hope to all Americans.
