1
Question of the Day What units do you use to measure height? What units do you use to measure weight?
2
Basic Measuring
3
Making Measurements When making measurements, it is necessary to include both a NUMBER and a UNIT For example, when measuring a piece of wood, you would say “the piece of wood is 5 feet” 5 is the number, feet is the unit
4
Measuring in Science Science uses the metric system of measurement. This is used all across the world. This is different from the system we generally use in America.
5
Why is it different in science? Science uses the metric system for multiple reasons: 1.So scientists from all around the world can work together 2.So scientists can repeat their experiments 3.So everyone speaks the same language
6
How do we measure length? In science, length is measured by meters – ex. millimeters, centimeters, meters Length is measured using a metric ruler
7
How do we measure mass? Mass is a measure of how much resistance something has Mass is measured using grams We will measure mass using a triple-beam balance
8
How to record data We will record data using tables and line graphs With all tables, make sure to include both a NUMBER and UNITS (ex. 0.4g or 0.4 grams)
9
Making a line graph Line graphs contain two variables: an INDEPENDENT variable and a DEPENDENT variable The DEPENDENT changes because of the INDEPENDENT For example, Weight changes because of age, not the other way around -So INDEPENDENT = age DEPENDENT = weight
10
TITLE DEPENDENT VARIABLE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
