3
Direct Expansion (DX)Systems When the cooling medium (Freon, or R-134a, for example ) expands in the cooling coil, which directly provides cold air to the space. Capacities: ½ to 50 tons
4
Systems and Applications, cont’d. Split Wall- mounted Ceiling Casette Ducted Split VRV/VRF
5
Ton of Refrigeration Define: 1 Ton of refrigeration =12,000 Btu/hr = 3,515 kW Which is the refrigeration load necessary to Produce one ton of ice in one day.
6
Unitary Systems Window Type Capacities: ½ to 2 tons.
7
Unitary Systems Split type Capacities: 1 to 6 tons. Disadvantages: Cannot handle fresh air
8
Unitary Systems, Vertical, or Free Standing Capacities: 3 to 10 tons. Application: Computer rooms
9
Vertical, or Free Standing
10

Air Distribution Systems 1- All Air Systems: When only air enters the space - Single Duct, Constant Volume (CV) -Single Duct, Variable Air Volume(VAV) -Constant Volume, Multi Zone -Double Duct, Constant Volume -Terminal Reheat 2- Air-Water Systems: When both air and water enter the space. Pipes are used for water as a two-pipe system. 3- All Water Systems: When only water enters the space. - Four Pipe System - Two Pipe System
