Important terms Cataract – a steep, rocky stretch in a river that causes rapids Delta – that part of the Nile in Lower Egypt where it divides into many smaller rivers. Friable – something that crumbles easily. Kmt – the Black Land: the area close to the Nile which is fertilized by the annual flood.

Important terms contimued Deshret – the red land: the desert. Faiyum – a part of the Nile south-west of Memphis where a branch of the Nile flows into a depression and forms a lake. This area is very fertile.

Resources in Egypt From the Black Land - a central resource was the Nile itself, from which came fish, papyrus and birds from its banks. - the land around the Nile allowed for the growing of crops and the breeding of animals.

Resources from Egypt continued - in the black land farmers grew wheat, barley, flax, fruit and vegetables. From the Red Land From the Red Land - minerals came from the desert.

Egypt’s neighbours and their resources Hatti – land of the Hittites to the North. Considered an equal to Egypt in power. Nubia – lands t the south. A source of gold, cereals, cattle. Also a trade route to Africa for ivory, incense and wood. Palestine – few resources, but an important transit corridor to Syria.

Egypt’s neighbours and their resources continued Byblos – a resource for cedar wood, and a site of battles between the Hittites and Egypt. Cyprus – a source of copper for bronze making. The Sea Lanes between Crete and Greece also important for trade and travel in the region.
