COMMUNICATION DEFINED Communication is a process. Communication is a transaction. In communication there are content and relationship dimensions. Communication shares meaning, ideas, feelings, and experiences with others.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION Telling It Like It Isn’t What is Language? “A structured system of symbols for sharing meaning” “Meaning is in the mind of the beholder.” “Words are symbols.” “Meaning is derived from associations or connections each of us makes when we interpret these words.”

COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE What is communication competence? Engaging in communication with others that is both effective and appropriate What is effectiveness? Effectiveness is how well we have progressed toward the achievement of goals.

APPROPRIATENESS: FOLLOWING THE RULES What does communication appropriateness mean? It means complying with rules and their accompanying expectations Social interaction rules are shared in many cultures, such as: -Politeness -Friendliness -Pleasantness NOTE: Communication becomes inappropriate if it violates the rules of the Group.

ETHICS: THE RIGHT AND WRONG OF COMMUNICATION What is meant by ethics? Ethics is a set of standards for judging the moral correctness of our behavior. Appropriateness and the “We-orientation” make ethics important.
