Touching the Void by Joe Simpson Climbing partners and close friends, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, were climbing in the Andes mountains of Peru when disaster struck. Joe fell on an icy slope and broke his leg. While dangling mid-air over a 100-foot cliff, Simon was forced to cut Joe’s rope before his weight pulled him over the cliff, too. Imagine Simon’s surprise when, 3 days later, Joe crawled into base camp, frostbitten, exhausted, starving, but alive!
