OBJECTIVE: HOW SMALL IS AN ATOM? WRITE AN EXAMPLE YOU CAN REMEMBER.

GOLD ATOMS USING A SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPE An atom is the basic unit of an element. An atom is a form of matter which may not be further broken down using any chemical means.atom
4
LET’S NAME SOME REAL SMALL THINGS Bead Pebble One strand of hair A cell Bacteria Virus Molecule Element Subatomic particle Where does an ATOM fit?
5
The building blocks of matter are called atoms. Yet you may be wondering what, exactly, is an atom? Here's a look at what an atom is and some examples of atoms.
6
DEPENDING ON THE ATOM… Looking at one grain of sand, there are as many atoms in that grain as there is sand on the beach.
7
IF A GRAPEFRUIT WERE THE SIZE OF THE WORLD, AN ATOM WOULD BE THE SIZE OF A BLUEBERRY.
8
-An atom is 0.0000001 of a millimeter in diameter -If you were to line up atoms in a single file line, you would need 40, 000,000 to make a line 1 cm long.
9
If you could shrink yourself down and be able to walk across the head of a pin for a few days, you would barely get to the other end and just then be able to be at the level of recognizing atoms.
10
The atom is the fundamental building block of all stuff, or what scientists like to call "matter".
11
An individual atom is very small. In fact, the smallest type of atom, hydrogen, has a diameter of 10 -8 cm.
12
This means that if the hydrogen atom was the size of a soccer ball, then a soccer ball would be 6450 kilometers (4008 miles) high. Every single object is composed of atoms.
13
Your body is made up of many, many individual atoms.
14
THERE ARE ALSO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ATOMS. IN FACT, THERE ARE OVER 100.
