Welcome to FIRST GRADE Curriculum Night!

ATTENDANCE The school day is from 7:50-3:00. The earliest students may be dropped off is 7:15. First Graders arriving early to school will go to the classroom at 7:30. At 7:50 students are considered tardy. A written note or doctor’s note must be sent to school upon a student’s return to school after they have been absent.

*Please send a note with your child if they are going home any way that is different from their normal routine. *Without a note stating changes, we must send the child home the normal way. *The office must be notified by 2:30 if there are changes in the way your child will be going home. The office will notify the teachers. *Because your child’s safety is our #1 priority, car riders will not be released at dismissal without a BLUE card.

Assessments: We will be assessing the students throughout the year. At the end of each six weeks we have reading level goals. First Six Weeks: Level D (4) Second Six Weeks: Level E (6-8) Third Six Weeks: Level F(10) Fourth Six Weeks: Level G (12) Fifth Six Weeks: Level H (14) Sixth Six Weeks: Level I (16) *We will be assessing beginning, middle, and end of the year with D.R.A. and the Star Early Literacy. *Math will have End of Unit Assessments. *Sight Word Testing will be at the end of each 6 weeks

Our report cards will be “Standards Based”. They will focus on the TEKS (state standards). Students will receive a “D” for Developed, “SD” for Still Developing, or “B” for Below. Many of the standards are not mastered until later in the year, so it is common to receive an “SD”. If we have a concern, we will call for a conference.

I can statements are the TEKS (state standards). The students are introduced to them each time that we introduce something new. These “I Can” statements correlate with our Standards Based Report card. The “I Can” statements use the same vocabulary and are higher level.

Word Study Reader’s Workshop Writer’s Workshop Math Workshop Science Social Studies Philosophy: *Help my students achieve the highest quality performance they can *Warm and nurturing environment *Students have ownership of their learning *Students are engaged *Differentiate instruction *Teach at higher levels of thinking

Math TEKS THEN 1.3(B) use concrete and pictorial models to apply basic addition and subtraction facts (up to 9 + 9 = 18 and 18 – 9 = 9). Example Problem: Joe has 9 apples. He got 6 more. How many apples does Joe have now? 9+6= 15

NEW Math TEKS NOW 1.5 (F) I can determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation when the unknown may be any of the three or four terms in the equation. Example Problem: Joe had 18 pieces of candy in his pocket. He first got 7 pieces from his mom. He then got 6 more pieces from his dad. Last he got some from his Nana. How many pieces of candy did his Nana give him? 18 = 7 + 6 + ___

Tips for Reading Predicting Look for important information. Look through the pictures. Think about what you already know. Think about what you will learn. Think about what will happen next.

Reading Strategies to figure out Tricky Words Look at the picture clues Look for a part you know in the word (if you know at, you can read cat) Reread the sentence and think about what would make sense Skip, read on and come back (context clues) Stretch through the words

Tips for Reading Summarizing Retell the story. Tell about the story parts (characters, setting, beginning, middle, & end). Think about the main idea and details.

Tips for Reading Evaluating How do you feel about what was read? Do you agree or disagree? Does it remind you of a time in your own life? Is there anything that you read that you still have a question about?

Tips for Reading Monitoring Have child point to the words as they read. Ask questions… “Does this make sense?” “Does it look right?” Try “fix ups”… reread, read ahead, or ask for help.
