National, not-for-profit organisation Established in 2006 by consortium of accident compensation organisations 24 members from across Australia Vision: to be globally recognised for fostering, developing and inspiring talent in the personal injury and disability management professions.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Background In 2014 WorkCover NSW appointed PIEF to develop and deliver their 1 day AHP training program into a online, self-paced training program The AHP Online Training Program is mandatory for those allied health practitioners applying for WorkCover approval The training program is mandatory for chiropractors, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, psychologists and osteopaths and costs $300.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future The training course was established to: Drive high quality evidence based treatment services that optimise the social and health outcomes of injured workers Provide an understanding of the NSW workers compensation system and who else may be involved in the workers recovery at work Set expectations for allied health practitioners working within the NSW workers compensation system, and Assist allied health practitioners with the practical requirements for delivering services within the workers compensation system; such as treatment planning, seeking approval to deliver services and communicating with the support team.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Overview of three modules Module 1 provides an overview of the workers compensation legislation, reasonably necessary treatment, discusses the importance of setting expectations with workers regarding the health benefits of work and describes the role of each member of the worker’s support team Module 2 is on the Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services Module 3 provides information regarding the procedures for working as an allied health practitioner within the NSW workers compensation system and information about completion of the allied health recovery request; offering practical experience through case studies.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Current progress The online program launched in April 2015 and over 1,500 participants have successfully completed modules 1 and 2 (module 3 will commence in early 2016) An overall satisfaction rate of 87% was achieved, which was high for a mandatory program and that is chargeable and that some participants encountered some technical issues when completing

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future RTWSA AHP program Due to the success of the NSW AHP program, RTWSA (formerly WorkCoverSA) have engaged PIEF to develop a similar training program for the SA market The program is expected to commence in November 2015, however will be not be mandatory and will be free of charge for SA participants.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Nationally Recognised Training There have been Nationally Recognised Training qualifications in Personal Injury Management for approximately 10 years. The qualifications continue to grow and evolve.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Previous PIM qualifications Prior to March 2015 there were five Personal Injury Management National Recognised Qualifications: Certificate III in Personal Injury Management (Claims Management) Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management (Claims Management) Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management (Underwriting) Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management (Return to Work) Diploma of Personal Injury Management.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Current PIM qualifications From March 2015 the number of qualifications were reduced from five to three Nationally Recognised Qualifications: Certificate III in Personal Injury Management Certificate IV in Personal Injury Management Diploma of Personal Injury Management.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Certificate IV The Cert IV qualification was reduced from three qualifications to one, however now includes three streams to choose from: Claims Management Return to Work Underwriting The benefits of this approach are that additional streams can be added without justifying that a full qualification is required and students do not have to enrol in another qualification to upgrade their skills in another area of Personal Injury Management.

Cert IV qualification was reduced from three qualifications to one, however now includes three streams to choose from: Advanced Case Management Disability Insurance Workplace Injury Insurance Management The benefits of this approach are that additional streams can be added without justifying that a full qualification is required and students do not have to enrol in another qualification to upgrade their skills in another area of Personal Injury Management.

Nathan Clarke, Executive Director, PIEF 28/10/2015 Territory Insurance Conference, resilient future Upcoming changes Upcoming changes to the Personal Injury Management qualifications include: A Medical Indemnity stream will be added to the Certificate IV An Advance Return to Work Stream will be added to the Diploma The Diploma will be renamed to the Diploma of Personal Injury and Disability Insurance Management It is expected that these changes will be made available from early 2016 onwards.

When the additional changes are made to the qualifications, PIEF plan to offer the following streams (expected to be mid 2016) in the Diploma of Personal Injury and Disability Insurance Management: Advanced Return to Work Disability Insurance Management Advanced Case Management.
