Salinger grew up in Manhattan, NY, the main setting of the novel. Just like Holden, Salinger did not enjoy the structure of a typical school. J.D. 4 The 1950’s Exploration Photostory   In order to have a better understanding of the novel and the time in which it was written, it is necessary to explore the era of the 1950’s.  LIST OF TOPICS FOR INVESTIGATION 1. 1.Political and Historical Events 2. 2.Entertainment (cultural, musical and sport icons) 3. 3.Fashion of the 1950’s 4. 4.New York City (building up of the city, icons, places, etc) 5. 5.Technology of the 1950’s  You and a partner or group depending on class size will investigate a topic of choice (only one topic per class). You will create a Photostory of your topic that includes a combination of pictures, music and voice narration.

6 Other Requirements   In addition to creating a group Photostory, you will be required to write a 600 word journal entry about your investigated topic.   This journal should include: – –What you knew about the 1950’s before investigating – –Discuss two important facts/ideas/opinions about your topic – –Why is this topic important to overall history of the United States?
