What is it? Mining is the extraction of minerals from Earth’s crust. Mining can be removing anything from aluminum to zirconium. The most popularly mined mineral/element is gold. It is brought out of the earth in it’s purest (24KT) gold state. This means that it is 100% gold. When it is put in jewelry, it is in 14KT gold, meaning 58.5% gold.

The Pros and Cons PROS Mining is a useful way of digging out needed natural resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal. Iron. Zirconium, titanium, and silicon, are used to help people, and the metals and minerals can’t be found anywhere else. CONS Mining can be dangerous. When the Romans invaded Great Britain, 12% of the miners died of fume inhalation.

Mining Accidents August 6 th 2007 Hundreds of rescuers broke through walls of rock in a desperate race to reach six coal miners trapped 1,500 feet below ground by a cave-in so powerful authorities initially thought it was an earthquake. As the rescue stretched into the night, workers were unable to make significant progress and the initial effort was declared a failure. Many mining accidents occur in all types of mining

TYPES OF MINING

Strip Mining Strip mining is a type of surface mining Trees and bushes are pulled down by bulldozers. Dirt and waste are removed. Explosives are buried and detonated, leaving a large hole. After all minerals and ores are removed from the ground the dirt is replaced.

Placer Mining Placer mining involves any type of mining where raw minerals are deposited in sand or gravel or on the surface and are picked up without having to drive, use dynamite or any other significant means.

Hydraulic Mining Hydraulic mining involves high pressure water. High pressure water is sprayed at the rock and the rock around the ores breaks up leaving behind the ores and minerals inside the rock.

Hard Rock Mining Hard rock Mining involved digging into solid rock to get ores and minerals in their purest form. This is the most common types of mining. Shaft heads are placed at the top of a shaft into the ground. (right)

Can Robots Mine? Mining Robots are supposed to be vigilant. They have to be able to go into tight spaces, carry a heavy load and tell the difference between coal and rock. Or diamonds. Or gold. Or iron. Or steel. Or any ore.

Mining Robots Robots that are going to mine will be expensive. You will need many motors to operate the pickaxe, activate the arms that pick up the ores/minerals, you will need to build it, and if the mine collapses that is a huge investment gone! Mining companies will also need to pay for repairs.

QUESTIONS? IDEAS? COMMENTS? CONCERNS?
