1 Technology Vocabulary By: Rakeysha Patterson

2 Search Engine  A computer program that searches documents, especially on the World Wide Web, for a specified word or words and provides a list of documents in which they are found.  I use the search engine to find all different type of new websites.  Browser  Google

3  Is a feature of the windows operating system that allows the user to modify system settings and controls.  Sometimes I need help on using the control panel on the computer  Console  System Settings Control Panel

4 Folder  An organizing unit in a computer's file system for storing and locating files.  I put all my work in a folder so I know it is saved the right way.  Directory  File

5 Download  to transfer (software, data, character sets, etc.) from a distant to a nearby computer, from a larger to a smaller computer, or from a computer to a peripheral device.  I download music on my computer from my phone player.  Transfer  Upload

6 Hard Drive  the mechanism that handles the reading, writing, and storage of data on the hard disk  I use a hard drive when I insert something into the computer.  Jump Drive  Software

7 Upload  to transfer (software, data, character sets, etc.) from a smaller to a larger computer.  I upload my work when I switch computers to do my work.  Posting on Facebook  Download

8 Backup  A copy or duplicate version, especially of a file, program, or entire computer system, retained for use in the event that the original is in some way rendered unusable.  On a computer I backup my information so it will be safe.  Copies  Lost And Found

9 Crash  A sudden, usually drastic failure. Most often said of the system, especially of magnetic disk drives (the term originally described what happened when the air gap of a hard disk collapses).  I watched the computer crash due to the problems it had.  Car Crash  Normal

10 File  An element of data in a storage system.  I save my work in a lot of different files in Technology Class.  Document  Folders

11 Keyboard  A hardware device consisting of a number of mechanical buttons (keys) which the user presses to input characters to a computer.  I try not to look at my keyboard when I type I want to recognize all the keys so I can be good at typing.  Manual  Writing In Pencil And Paper

12 Hardware  The physical, touchable, material parts of a computer or other system. The term is used to distinguish these fixed parts of a system from the more changeable software or data components which it executes, stores, or carries.  I would like to use the hardware on the computer in Technology Class.  Keyboard  Software

13 Website  A connected group of pages on the World Wide Web regarded as a single entity, usually maintained by one person or organization and devoted to a single topic or several closely related topics.  I search the website typing web so I can do my typing work.  Typing Web  Search Engine

14 Scroll  To change the portion of a document displayed in a window or on a VDU screen. In a graphical user interface, scrolling is usually controlled by the user via scroll bars, whereas on a VDU the text scrolls up automatically as lines of data are output at the bottom of the screen.  I scroll down when I have to go further down on my computer screen.  Document  Freezing Not Moving

15 Memory  These days, usually used synonymously with Random Access Memory or Read-Only Memory, but in the general sense it can be any device that can hold data in machine-readable format.  When Im done with my work I put it in a file so I can save my memory.  Save  Losing Information
