Making Sense of Numbers A look at improving number sense at the elementary level. Group Members: Jenny Campbell, Marlin Campbell, Ross Matney, Samantha Reed, Shane Reed

Target Audience Carroll County K-5 Math Teachers 7 elementary schools Most K-3 are self-contained All 4-5 are departmentalized

Partners Beverly Parker, director of instruction Pearson (SOL data) ITRT at each school Everyday Math consultants In conjunction with our partners, we are striving to improve our SOL scores and student’s knowledge in the area of number sense.

Why Improvement? Data shows that there is a significant weakness in number sense in Carroll County. Over the last 3 years, number sense scores have been at or below meeting the standards.

What does the data show? There has been a drop in Number Sense scores from 2008-2009. There is a gap between Number Sense and all other strands of Mathematics.

What Can We Do? (Goals) Provide teachers with strategies and resources for teaching Number and Number Sense effectively. Professional development in the area of Number Sense Activities to help increase number sense Support in all areas of mathematics
