Single biggest cause of disability in the UK 23% of total burden of ill health Life expectancy of people with severe mental illness is 20 years lower than the general population. Strong link with multiple deprivation Half of all mental illness (excluding dementias) starts by the age of 14. Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing

Good mental health and wellbeing have been shown to result in health, social and economic benefits for individuals, communities and populations. Such benefits include: Better physical health Reductions in health-damaging behaviour Greater educational achievement Improved productivity Higher incomes Reduced absenteeism Less crime More participation in community life Improved overall functioning Reduced mortality.

Early identification and intervention as soon as mental disorder arises Conduct disorder – parenting interventions for families Early intervention for psychosis Early detection of psychosis Screening and brief intervention in primary care for alcohol misuse Early diagnosis and treatment of depression at work

Summary Mental ill-health costs England more than an estimated £105 billion each year. These costs include costs to: –The NHS –Reduced educational outcomes –Reduced employment and productivity –Increased crime –Reduced quality of life Evidence based interventions highlight the health and associated economic savings of intervening early as soon as mental illness has arisen, preventing mental illness and promoting mental health. Scope for redesign of services that support people who live with mental illness – more timely, more personalised and increasingly cost effective.
