by Joanna Chau Skipton Castle is over 900 years old. A Norman baron originally used it as a Motte and Bailey castle in 1090. The first owner was Robert de Romille. Today it stands as a tourist attraction and a private residence. It is one of the best preserved castles in England.

Lady Anne Clifford Lady Anne Clifford was the last Clifford to own the castle. She repaired the castle after the Civil War. In the courtyard it stands a yew tree planted by Lady Anne. Lady Anne wrote her own letter to her father when she was eight. She fought hard for her own rights.

Inside the castle There is a large banqueting hall,
a medieval kitchen, a new kitchen, a three-floor watchtower, and many other rooms and cellars. There is a place called the “long drop”. Do you know what it is? Why is it “long”?
