It is a dark time as the Age of Piracy nears to a close. Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) of the East India Company has gained control of the terrifying ghost ship, the Flying Dutchman, and its malevolent, vengeful Captain, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). The Dutchman now roams the seven seas, unstoppable, destroying pirate ships without mercy, under the command of Admiral Norrington (Jack Davenport). So why do we like the Pirates so much? I believe that Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune is right when he says, “What we love about pirate movies and myths, of course, is their mix of adventure, freedom and naughtiness.” And I believe Brian Lowry of Variety is correct in his observation, that “the two ‘Pirates’ sequels feel less like movies than a shared event -- much like a concert where the audience sits patiently through lesser known numbers to hear the band belt out favorite tunes.” Yes, indeed, Pirates is a shared event that celebrates the adventure (and need) for freedom in all of its glory and, yes, in all of its naughtiness! It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err. It passes my comprehension how human beings, be they ever so experienced and able, can delight in depriving other human beings of that precious right.” ‘Pirates’ is a cultural celebration of the very basic human need for freedom which exists in every human heart! 1. “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” 2. “I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is.” Production notes and photos © 2007 Walt Disney Pictures HollywoodJesus.com
