3 Oral Language Strategies  Speech recognition software  Games, role-playing, songs  Information gap activities  Paired or small group discussions

4  More interaction with English = improved oral skills.  Hearing peers and teachers speak allows children to have more exposure to English.  Choose discussions the students will be interested in.

5 Strategies to Promote Early Literacy  Word Wall  Students will begin to recognize high frequency words  See patterns and relationships between words  Build phonemic awareness skills

6 Creating a Word Wall  Put the words in a common area that is easily seen and accessible to all students  Use words that the students will regularly use  Add about 5 words per week  Use the word wall daily  Have the students interact by playing games, using words in sentences, etc.

7 Writing  Journals  Allows students to write about whatever interests them  Provides constant dialogue with the teacher, as well as the opportunity for feedback  Children can begin by drawing  Can be used for all ability levels

8 Beginning Readers  Think-aloud  Allows teachers to model thought-process involved in reading  Constant interaction with material  Comprehension, prediction skills

9 Intermediate Readers  Think-Pair-Share  Read and share information with partner  Also helps oral language development  Can be used regardless of content area
