Building A Longhorn-Ready Mobile PC Burt Parker Technology Evangelist Mobile Platforms Division tpc_bizd @ microsoft.com Microsoft Corporation

Session Outline Mobile PCs Tomorrow Battery and Power Technology Processors, Chipsets, and Features Graphic Subsystems Mobile Performance with Windows codenamed “Longhorn” Data and System Security Summary and Call To Action Relevant Mobile Platforms Presentations Contact Us

Mobile PCs Tomorrow What are they? Getting Personal and more Mobile Smaller, lighter, more ergonomic Carried and Used all day Always connected Natural Input (pen and voice) Shedding Vestigial Compromises Larger, more powerful, impressive feature list Performance rivaling modern desktops Full-range media experience

Mobile PC Challenges

Battery And Power Technology Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) ask Refine the Traditional Details Fully Implement ACPI methods and Mechanisms Plug current leaks on motherboards and peripherals Be smart about power plane control and separation Modify backlight intensity to suit ambient light levels Examine Your Battery Strategies Balance Big Batteries versus Extender Batteries Look at Warm Swapping and Fast Charging Look to Technology (Future) Fuel Cells: Available now, some airline concerns and heat Micro-Turbines: Technically viable, noise and heat issues Photovoltaic solutions: Viable today, outdoors only

Battery And Power Technology Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) ▲ Windows codenamed “Longhorn” Requires ACPI Non-ACPI HALs are not included in Longhorn No Support: APM, EISA, Hardware Profiles, ISAPnP Retired Processor Drivers: amdk6.sys, p3.sys Intel Mobile P-III SpeedStep supported by ACPI 2.0 Hybrid Sleep Combines Standby and Hibernate Users just put the PC to ‘Sleep’ System saves hibernate file, then enters Standby Normally resumes from memory (fast) If Standby loses power, the system resumes from the hibernate image, without data loss or error Eliminates S0 transition on S4 doze timeout

Battery And Power Technology User Interface (UI) Improved Management UI Battery Meter is clear, current, and more informative Power Management Plans are Far More Intuitive, Useful, and Accessible Simplified Shutdown UI Move to appliance-like Power button Promote Sleep as default off state

Battery And Power Tech Sleep reliability Reducing Component Vetoes and Queries See “Longhorn Power Management Update”

Battery And Power Tech Windows Direct Windows Direct is Microsoft’s means to quickly resume directly to Windows-based applications Example Launch to Application Scenarios E.g., “media” button quickly starts a media player or shell from any non-working state E.g., Offers quick system startup from Standby, Hibernate, or ‘Off’ (S5) Mobile Users are Increasingly looking to carry and use their Mobile PC just as they do a Cell Phone or Portable Media Player Implies expectations of near-instant system access Features most resembling mobile appliance features inherit the greatest user expectation for ‘instant on’

Processors, Chipsets, And Features Processors We finally have true Mobile CPU solutions Faster and more power-efficient main CPU offerings Faster and more efficient auxiliary processors Multiple Vendors: Intel, AMD, VIA, ARM Partners, etc. Breaking the “GHz = Performance” Myth! Chipsets Full featured and practical legacy reduction choices Integrated graphics has improved…must continue to Varied choices allow design teams to better manage price and performance decisions according to the targeted purchaser and/or user, and the intended usage

Graphic Subsystems Probably #1 Longhorn Mobile PC Question! This is not as tricky as it seems Modern Mobile PC graphics subsystems burn off as many Watts as the primary CPU! Changing: Performance != frames per second Integrated versus Discrete Graphic subsystems Performance == Fast, Power-managed GPUs! The Longhorn Influence Help ‘nudge’ the bottom performers up Mid-to-High performance solutions are on target now Users want a full and effective Windows experience!

Graphic Subsystems ClearType You Built It, They Bought It: Fully Utilize It LCD Pixels have a finite resolution, why utilize just 1/3? ClearType, a Microsoft Technology, is Built into the Operating System (OS) Enhance Further through the Power Toy and Web ‘Tuner’ www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/1.htm

Mobile Performance With Longhorn Longhorn ready Will Longhorn Run On Mobile PC Hardware? Most of today’s Mobile PC Hardware runs Longhorn More capable Hardware runs Longhorn better, or runs more of Longhorn’s advanced features, especially graphics The graphics experience varies per system capability The Operating System will adjust the presentation complexity As with any OS, you need comparable hardware to get a comparable experience, Mobile or stationary For the full-on, best possible Longhorn experience, assume Mobile PC hardware similar to this CPU – Mid to Performance class overall, nearer the high end of today’s Mobile CPUs RAM – 512 MB or better, for both desktops and mobile

Mobile Performance With Longhorn Gauging it WinSAT is Your Key! ALPHA version of this tool is in the WinHEC Longhorn build Tuning and enhancements during the Beta-2 cycle Key Longhorn Platform Feature Performance Understand performance differences between models Measure differences between configuration alternatives (I.e., Catch mis-configured DRAM using the memory tests) WinSAT Assesses a System’s Graphics, Memory, Processor, and Storage Also Subsystem Attributes, Features, and Capabilities

Data And System Security Data and System Security Absolutely critical to Enterprise solutions Increasingly critical to Home Users Physical Hybrid ATA Hard Drive Solutions Heads parked and Spindle stopped = lower crash probability Saves 90% of disk drive power = approx 10% of power budget Faster boot and resume times = Save disk spin up time Malicious (or Capricious) Taxicabs EAT laptops and Tablet PCs! Hardware guarantees on the motherboard See also Secure Startup session, for details

Summary And Call To Action Utilize the tools and advances to meet customers’ rising expectations We all need to focus on addressing our customer’s wants and needs Build the best Mobile PC systems ever seen, today…and tomorrow, together, we will build Mobile PCs running the full Longhorn experience to eclipse them! Perfect the details and THRILL your customers!
