8.1 Chemical Bonds, Lewis Symbols, and the Octet Rule. By: Chris Wemmer and Maggie Kastenhuber
2
Chemical Bonds A chemical bond is formed “whenever atoms or ions are strongly attached to one another” Work Cited: Brown and Lemay Chemistry the central science New Jersey, Upper Saddle River, 2003 Page 276, paragraph 1
3
Types of Chemical Bonds 1.Ionic Bonds -an ionic bond “refers to electrostatic forces that exists between ions of opposite charge.” 2.Covalent Bonds - “ result from the sharing of electrons between two atoms.” 3.Metallic Bonds - “are found in metals” Work Cited: Brown and Lemay Chemistry the central science New Jersey, Upper Saddle River, 2003 Page 276, paragraph 2-4
4
Lewis Symbols Lewis symbols are simply the chemical symbols plus dots around the symbols representing the valence electrons of that chemical. Work Cited: Brown and Lemay Chemistry the central science New Jersey, Upper Saddle River, 2003 Page 276, paragraph 5
5
The Octet Rule The rule that states that “atoms will gain, lose, or share electrons” in order to obtain 8 valence electrons to complete an octet. “An octet of electrons consists of full s and p sub shells on an atom.” “An Octet can be thought of as four pairs of valence electrons arranged around the atom. Work Cited: Brown and Lemay Chemistry the central science New Jersey, Upper Saddle River, 2003 Page 276, paragraph 8
