Cellular organization – all organisms are made up of cells. Unicellular = 1 cell or multicellular = many cells Chemicals of life Living things are made up of chemicals. Ex. Water, carbohydrates, proteins, etc. Energy use – need energy to do what we need to do
3
Response to surroundings – react to changes in environment. Stimulus = the change in the environment Response = reaction to the stimulus Growth & development Growth = process of becoming larger Development = process of change to produce a more complex organism Reproduction – produce offspring similar to parents
4
Living things come from living things through reproduction However, 400 years ago people once believed that life could appear from nonliving things (spontaneous generation)
5
Covered jars – no maggots Uncovered jars -- maggots appeared
6
Bacteria grew in the unboiled broth but not in the boiled broth. When the boiled broth was exposed to air, bacteria grew. Pasteur concluded that bacteria do not spontaneously come from broth.
