Immigrants in America and Brazil By Mrs. Noriega’s Third Graders

Coming to America For over 300 years, millions of Africans were captured, brought to the Americas, and forced into slavery. Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery and worked for freedom. By 1900, thousands of free black children attended school. From 1910 until 1940, the first stop for most Asian immigrants traveling to the West Coast was Angel Island, in San Francisco Bay. The immigrants coming through Ellis Island had to get a lot of shots. They also had to prove that they could read and write.

Coming to America, continued As immigrants many people hoped to find freedom and jobs. People also came to California from Spanish speaking places, including Mexico and Central America. Today more than one-fourth of the people of California are from a Latino background.

Brazil Over the years, people from Germany, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Portugal moved to Brazil. Many Japanese people live in the same neighborhood in Brazil. Many Japanese immigrants in Brazil pass on their traditions to their family. The people of Brazil have ancestors from many parts of the world. Millions of enslaved people were taken to Brazil from Africa. Brazil finally ended slavery in 1888.
