2 KWL  Head a sheet of paper with MLA Heading: PS Sources.  Create a KWL chart.  Write down at least two things you already know or think about primary and secondary sources.  Write down at least two things you want to know about primary or secondary sources.  You may use a bulleted list.  After viewing this PowerPoint, write down at least six things your learn about primary and secondary sources. Two of your six should be SPECIFIC examples of a type of primary and secondary sources.

3 Primary Sources – original sources of information recorded as it happened  EXAMPLES:  Memoirs  Diaries  Poetry  First-Hand Accounts  Historical Documents  Personal Interviews  Oral Histories  Government Documents  Autobiographies  Photographs  Artifacts  Data from Scientific Study

4 Why Use Primary Sources?  To help you think critically and to help you distinguish fact from opinion  To help you develop your own conclusions about information and events  To help you better understand who or what is being examined by placing yourself in that time period or situation.

5 Secondary Sources – summarize, analyze, or critique primary sources  EXAMPLES:  Dictionaries  Textbooks  Encyclopedias  Articles that Review Sources  Biographies

6 Why Use Secondary Sources?  Access to expert opinions to help you evaluate what happened  To gain insight by examining the same events from different perspectives  To form your own opinion after understanding the opinions of others

7 Primary Source Example  Turn to page 678 in your textbook.  As a group, read from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.  Once you are finished reading, complete the essay assignment located on the next three slides.

8 Short Essay for from Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl  Both the drama and the diary entries present Anne as a full, dynamic character. Describe 3 insights into Anne’s personality and values that you had after reading the diary entries that you did not have after Act I. Support your response with text evidence from the play, Diary of Anne Frank and from the diary entries, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.  Move to the next slide for assignment directions and expectations.

9 Essay Directions and Expectations  This essay is due at the beginning of class on Friday the 30 th. It is a 50 point test grade.  You may hand write this essay in blue or black ink, or you may type this essay. Whether you are handwriting or typing, make sure you double-space and use the appropriate heading. Typed essays should follow all MLA requirements.  MLA Heading: Primary vs Secondary Documents.  You will need your literature book. Your book will be used for DIRECTLY quoted evidence. MLA in-text citation for the diary entries is (Frank p#). MLA in-text citation for the play is (Goodrich and Hackett p#). Remember to avoid dangling quotes!  Continued in next slide…

10 Essay Directions and Expectations  Use PEEL to format this essay.  Format Sample:  1 st Paragraph – a short introduction that uses your thesis to state your three points.  2 nd -4 th paragraphs – short body paragraphs that each give 1-2 pieces of evidence for your point as well as an explanation of that evidence; also has a final sentence that links to the next paragraph.  5 th paragraph – a conclusion that restates your 3 points (thesis) and summarizes how you proved your point.  Suggested sentence lengths: 1-3 for intro and conclusion; 5-6 sentences for bodies  GRAMMAR AND SPELLING COUNT!
