6 Overview of I and II Kings Originally one book –Early Greek manuscripts of the OT combined the books of Samuel and Kings under the title of "kingdoms," or "reigns" –Kings was broken into two books for convenience sake because of its length (Greek translation) Authorship –Some portions of the book identical to the book of Jeremiah –Jeremiah would have personal knowledge of some contents –Evidence that Ezra was the author after the Babylonian captivity Timeline –Approximately 400 years, written between 560 B.C. and 538 B.C. –Start: Death of David in 971 B.C. –End: Jehoiachin's release from a Babylonian prison in 562 B.C.

7 Overview of I and II Kings Books of Samuel and Kings cover Israel's period as a nation under a king: –I Samuel: Life of Saul –II Samuel: Life of David –I Kings: Solomon and the divided kingdom –II Kings: The fall of the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah Content of I and II Kings –47 chapters (I Ki – 22 chapters, II Ki – 25 chapters) –History of the Jewish commonwealth –Death of David to subjugation to Babylonians

8 Purpose –Imparting of great moral lessons backed up by well- known illustrations –Religious history –Focused upon kings rather than prophets Key Lesson –God does not fail His people; His people, led by their kings, have failed God –God’s covenant has the contingency of Israel’s faithfulness –Covenant also promises a return from exile those that return to God Overview of I and II Kings

11 Main Characters of Chapters 9-10 Solomon – David’s youngest son and the third king of Israel Hiram – King of Tyre Queen of Sheba – queen of a region in south Arabia, around Yemen

12 God Appears to Solomon Again (1 Kings 9:1-9) God confirms the answer to Solomon’s prayer (9:1-5) –Heard Solomon’s prayer and supplication –Consecrated temple house which he built –God’s name will be there forever, and His eyes and His heart will be there perpetually God warns Solomon (9:6-9) –If Solomon or his descendants turn away from God, He promises to correct them –Would cast Israel out of His sight if the kings of Israel abandon God

13 Solomon’s Building Projects (1 Kings 9:10-28) Hiram upset with Solomon (9:10-14) –Hiram had supplied Israel with as much wood and gold Solomon desired –Solomon gives Hiram 20 cities in the land of Galilee –Hiram is displeased but still gives Solomon 120 talents of gold Slave-labor force raised (9:15-24) –Build the house of the Lord, Solomon’s palace –Millo, Jerusalems northern defensive perimeter –Wall of Jerusalem, Hazor (far north), Megiddo (Jezreel Valley - north, and Gezer (west).

15 Solomon’s Building Projects (1 Kings 9:10-28) Slave-labor force raised (9:15-24) –Solomon wrongly used the remaining Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites Naval expeditions brought back gold (9:25-28) –Built a fleet of ships at Ezion Geber (Aqaba) –Hiram sent sailors to work with Solomon’s navy –Sailed to Ophir, perhaps along the African coast or even India

16 Queen of Sheba Visits (1 Kings 10:1-13) Jesus used the Queen of Sheba as an example of a seeker (Matt 12:39-45) –Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it –Greater Solomon is here – how much more we should seek Him Exchange of gifts (10:10-13) –120 talents of gold, spices, and precious stones –Almug wood –Solomon gave according to royal generosity

17 Solomon’s Great Wealth (1 Kings 10:14-29) Yearly income (10:14-15) –666 talents of gold –Also received more than that from merchants Examples of Solomon’s prosperity (10:16-26) –Gold shields in the House of the Forest of Lebanon –Throne of ivory, gold drinking cups –All earth sought his wisdom –Many chariots and horsemen –Horses imported from Egypt and Keveh –Even exported horses and chariots
