1 2008 ASTD Conference Leadership Survey Results See what ASTD Conference attendees think about the state of leadership talent. Final Results Thursday, June 5, 2008

2 2008 ASTD Conference Attendees at the 2008 ASTD Conference were invited to participate in a brief, online, real-time survey. The survey asked attendees their opinions on timely talent management issues as: –Future critical leadership skills –Trends affecting leadership –Organizational talent management efforts –Generational differences 320 individuals participated in the survey. The results of the survey are summarized in this report.

3 ASTD attendees say these are the top skills they need to develop to be an effective leader in the future: N= 320

4 ASTD attendees report their organizations are facing changing and unique challenges… N= 320

5 ASTD attendees feel their organizations are ill- prepared to face these challenges… N= 320

6 While ASTD attendees believe their organizations are dedicated to talent management, much improvement needs to be made in the actual efforts. N= 320

8 The majority of ASTD attendees believe people from different generations have different values. N= 320

9 CCL research actually shows… People of all generations have similar values. FAMILY is the value chosen most frequently. Values and behaviors are not the same thing – someone can behave very differently from you and still hold the same values.

10 Most ASTD attendees believe people from different generations want their leaders to have different attributes. N= 320

11 CCL research actually shows… People of all generations and at all levels want essentially the same attributes in a leader. People want their leaders to be: –Credible –Trustworthy –Dependable –Farsighted –Encouraging –Good listeners

12 The majority of ASTD attendees believe it is much harder to retain a younger employee than an older employee. N= 320

13 CCL research actually shows… Employees of all generations are more likely to remain with an organization if they receive: –Good compensation –Learning and development –Opportunities for advancement –Respect and recognition –Good quality of life outside work Employers can focus their efforts on this list, but must realize that each individual wants a slightly different combination of these items.

14 Most ASTD attendees believe younger employees are more likely to want a coach than older employees. N= 320

15 CCL research actually shows… People from every generation and at every level want a coach. Coaching is one of the best methods for helping your employees learn and improve because the learning is more individualized and targeted. You can have your employees be coaches by providing them with more knowledge, greater experience, better communication skills, and specific training on how to be a coach.
