MITOTIC CELL DIVISION Cell Reproduction Without Sex

Cell Life Cycle cell life cycle includes a period of growth and preparation for cell division (blue). This period is called Interphase. mitosis is the period of time that the cell spends reproducing.

Plant Cell Mitosis the many stages of the cell life cycle can be seen in the image to the right the process of cell reproduction includes prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase

Interphase longest phase of life cycle G 1 – phase of rapid growth and increase in protein and cell RNA S – synthesis phase when DNA duplicates G 2 - phase of organelle development and growth in preparation for cell division

Prophase chromosomes appear the nucleolus disappears the cell membrane begins to break down

Very Late Prophase nuclear membrane has disappeared chromosomes start to move to the equator of the cell each chromosome has two identical chromatids

Metaphase chromosomes align along the equator of the cell spindles that are attached to the poles connect to the centromeres

Early Anaphase chromosomes are pulled to the poll by the contraction of the spindle fibers chromatids are separated at the centromere

Late Anaphase chromosomes begin to congregate at the poles the energy for this process if provided by the mitochondria

Early Telophase the new cell wall begins to form to separate the new cell the chromosomes begin to form a nucleus

Late Telophase the chromosomes start to uncoil and become less dense two new identical cells are formed

Mitosis Review all four stages of mitosis can be seen in this picture. note the process by which the red and blue chromosomes separate.

Interactive Mitosis Tutorial This is an excellent interactive mitosis animation tutorial for high school biology students. http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/multimedia/mitosis/
