Immune System Hidden Threats

Maryland Science Content Standard Select several body systems and explain the role of cells, tissues and organs that effectively carry out a vital function for the organism, such as defense

Objective Title:Homeland Security Date:12/3/2015 I will explain how the body reacts to allergens. I will determine how diabetes affects the body. I will describe what cancer is and explain its affects on the human body.

Lesson Question: How can the body develop diseases that are not contagious?

Engage your thinking… Questions: 1.What is an allergy? 2.Are allergies contagious? 3.What is an “allergic reaction”?

Let’s explore: Allergic Reactions! We already know that allergies are noninfectious disorders that affect your body in a number of ways, but if you have an allergy, how does your immune system react when these substances are found? Use the website above and your books (pp. 175-176) to answer the following: 1. What happens when lymphocytes come into contact with an allergen? 2. How does a histamine work? 3. What is asthma? http://www.emedicinehealth.com/articles/8401-1.asp

Engage your thinking… What is an Allergy? An allergy is a disorder in which the immune system is very sensitive to a foreign substance that has entered the body and shouldn’t be there Allergies are a type of noninfectious disease…a disease that is NOT spread from person to person. Your body reacts to allergens by sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, rashes, etc. when these substances enter the body.

Non-Infection Diseases Are not caused by microorganisms Are not contagious Have increased in numbers in recent years Include allergies, diabetes, and cancer.

Let’s explore: Causes and Affects of Diabetes! Diabetes is a noninfectious disorder in which the body is unable to regulate glucose levels in the blood. But what are the causes and effects of this disease? Use the website above and your books (Chapter 5) to answer the following: 1. How is insulin a factor in developing diabetes? 2. How does diabetes affect the levels of glucose in the blood? 3. What are some of the effects of diabetes? 4. Which system(s) would you say that diabetes affects? http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/overview/index.htm#what

Let’s explore: Cancer! Cancer is a noninfectious disease in which cells multiply uncontrollably, over and over, destroying healthy tissues in the process. But what causes cancer, and how can it be treated? Use the website above and your books (pp. 177-179) to answer the following: 1. How does a tumor form? 2. What are some causes of cancer? 3. What treatments are available for cancer? http://cancer.about.com/od/glossary/

Explain… The Spread of Cancer How does cancer spread throughout the body? Please explain and use the following terms in your response: tumor blood cells divide

Types of Cancer… Brainstorm to list as many types of cancer as you know and think of risks that might increase your chances of developing that type of cancer:

Evaluate yourself… Is it possible for your genes to determine if you will develop some types of non- infectious disease? Please explain using information from your text and our class investigations.

Evaluate yourself… Can you: Explain how the body reacts to allergens? Determine how diabetes affects the body? Describe what cancer is and explain its affects on the human body?
