Rigging Systems Safety Knowing the Ropes

General Tips Make sure to use proper, high-quality equipment. Use things as intended (example: Booms are not to be swung around…no pirate play!)

Check the rigging is in good shape before using it. Have a teacher or responsible adult do it. Make sure the rigging is maintained properly and according to manufacturer’s instructions

Type-specific Tips Hard or Framed Flown Scenery: – The construction should be done by a capable person and safety checked – Parts of the scenery should be properly bolted or glued or welded – Moveable pieces should be secured in place before flying to prevent injury – Pins should be safely secured to the hinges they sit in. – All pieces that carry a load/weight should be bolted or secured to the fixed set or frame.

Temporary Flown Scenery- Pick-up Points and Lines – Pick-up points should be spread out to even out the stress and weight, as not to break and hurt someone. – All flying hardware should be secured to the flying unit.

Temporary Flown Scenery — Rigging – Make sure that any chains, clamps, bolts, etc. are of the right size and strength for the weight. – Always follow manufacturer’s guidelines. – Always make sure that the strength to load ratio for a flown unit is at least 8:1. – Any trim-adjustment mechanisms should be secured to the flown unit. – Any guide ropes or chains should be tied securely.
