Specification section 7.1

Sustainability 7.1 As the demand for products increases, the materials that we use to make them are running out as many of them are not RENEWABLE. In addition, the extraction and processing of raw materials requires massive amount of energy. When designing and making products, what can we do to slow down the use of NON-SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS and the effects of pollution.
3
Sustainability 7.1 REDUCE REUSE RECOVER RECYCLE The ‘4Rs’ How far should we consider only the needs of the manufacturer and the user?
4
Sustainability 7.1 Look at the product that has been designed Are there are parts that are not needed? Do we need to use as much material or could we use less? Could the design of the product be changed without making it less attractive? Could we use a more efficient manufacturing process? REDUCE
5
Sustainability 7.1 Look at the product that has been designed. Which parts of it could be used again? Could the product be used by a number of different people? Should we try and avoid fashion trends when designing, making product last longer? REUSE
6
Sustainability 7.1 Look at the product that has been designed and manufactured. Are you able to recover any energy from waste? How can we stop wasting energy? Can energy be produced from waste materials? RECOVER
7
Sustainability 7.1 Look at the product that has been designed. How easy is it to break down into its component parts? How many of the parts could be used again in one form or another? How much energy is needed to reprocess these parts? Have we planned to use recycled materials when we make it? RECYCLE
8
Sustainability 7.1 All products have a LCA. It is the method that is used to measure the impact that a product makes on the environment. LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS Disposal and Recycling Raw Material Product Manufacture Distribution Product Use
9
Sustainability 7.1 Remember that these principles not only apply to the designing of products but also to the manufacturing of them.
